The Chopta & Tungnath Trek is a scenic Himalayan trek in Uttarakhand that takes you through the beautiful meadows and forests of Chopta to Tungnath Temple and Chandrashila Summit. Tungnath is one of the highest Shiva temples in the world, and Chandrashila offers spectacular Himalayan views.
Our Chopta & Tungnath package is planned as a 3 Days / 2 Nights trek.
The trek reaches approximately 12,000–12,073 ft at Chandrashila Summit. Official Uttarakhand Tourism sources place Chandrashila around 4,000 m.
The Chopta–Tungnath–Chandrashila route is approximately 9–10 km round trip, depending on the exact starting point and itinerary.
Yes. It is generally considered an easy to moderate trek. However, the climb becomes steeper around Tungnath and Chandrashila, so reasonable fitness is recommended.
Yes. Beginners can undertake this trek with proper preparation, comfortable trekking shoes and a good level of basic fitness.
Chopta can be visited throughout the year, while winter brings snow-covered landscapes. Uttarakhand Tourism highlights November to May as a particularly good period to visit Chopta, with winter offering a snowy experience.
Snow availability depends on weather and snowfall. December to February generally offers the strongest possibility of experiencing snow, but conditions can vary from season to season.
The trek generally starts from the Chopta region, with the main trail leading towards Tungnath and then Chandrashila. The Chopta–Tungnath trail is around 3–4 km one way depending on the reference point used.
Tungnath is approximately 3–4 km from Chopta, depending on the exact starting point.
Chandrashila is approximately 1.5 km beyond Tungnath Temple. The final section is considerably steeper, especially when there is snow.
On a clear day, you can enjoy panoramic Himalayan views including peaks such as Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Dome and other Himalayan ranges.
Temple opening and access can vary seasonally, particularly during winter. Temple darshan should not be assumed to be available on every departure date. Trek conditions and local authorities’ directions should be followed.
Yes, when undertaken with proper preparation and experienced trek support. Weather, snow and trail conditions can change quickly in the mountains, so trekkers should follow instructions from the trek leader and local authorities.
Essential items include:
Yes, proper trekking shoes are strongly recommended, especially during winter and snow conditions. Sports shoes are not ideal for slippery or snowy sections.
Accommodation depends on the package and operational conditions and may include guest house/homestay and camping arrangements.
Yes, meals included in the package are provided according to the Himalayasgriffon trek plan, with vegetarian food and other inclusions specified at the time of booking.
For the Himalayasgriffon Chopta & Tungnath package, transportation is provided according to the selected package and itinerary. Pickup and drop-off points should be checked before booking.
Yes, selected trekking equipment can be arranged on a rental basis, subject to availability. We recommend pre-booking equipment before departure.
It depends on their age, fitness, medical condition and previous trekking experience. Since the Chandrashila section involves a steep climb, families should assess individual fitness before booking.
Mountain weather can change rapidly. If conditions become unsafe, Himalayasgriffon may modify the itinerary, route or summit plan based on the trek leader’s assessment and local conditions. Safety remains the priority.
Travel insurance is recommended for additional protection, especially for trekking in high-altitude and remote areas. Check the policy for trekking, evacuation and medical coverage.
The summit is weather- and condition-dependent. If the trek leader determines that continuing is unsafe, the group may be asked to turn back. Reaching the summit is never guaranteed because safety comes first.
With Himalayasgriffon, the focus is on a well-organised Himalayan experience with local knowledge, trained trek support, safety practices and a genuine connection with the mountains.

It was an amazing trekking experience! The arrangements were perfect, guides were super helpful, and the overall vibe was just awesome. We enjoyed every moment and created unforgettable memories. Highly recommended for every adventure lover!

Points that really worked for me. All home stay we stayed, Wherher it was at Sankari or Osla were very comfortable and great hospitality. Timely food and family like atmosphere in mountains and when you are seating in the tent when it rains outside, the conversations and stories from our Trek leader Suraj were interesting and entertaining. Suraj Rana definitely should be your trek guide. But be prepared for the mountains. As they say Mumbai ka fashion aur pahado ka Mausam kabhi bhi badal sakta hai Thanks Suraj Rana

My trip was great with himalayasgriffon❤️ .Food was nice. Our trek leader vijalu sir was very helpful and supportive, thanks
